Top Tasks in a Post-Construction Cleanup Checklist

Once the last contractor packs up, the work isn't quite done. Construction and remodeling projects leave behind a surprising amount of dust, debris, and residue that needs proper attention before a space is ready to use. Here's what a thorough post-construction cleanup looks like.

Dust and Debris Removal

Start with every floor surface, carpet, tile, and hardwood. Sweep first, then follow up with a HEPA vacuum to pull fine drywall dust out of corners, vents, and tight spaces that a regular vacuum would just push around.

Wipe Down Every Surface

Construction dust settles everywhere, including inside cabinets, drawers, and appliances. Wipe down walls, countertops, baseboards, light switches, window sills, and vents using a microfiber cloth and a gentle cleaner that lifts residue without spreading it.

Clean All Fixtures

Sinks, tubs, toilets, and faucets often end up with plaster or paint splatters that need careful removal. Clean all glass surfaces with a proper glass cleaner, and check new cabinets and appliances for sticker residue that gets left behind during installation.

Floor Care

After the dust is handled, mop tile and hardwood with the right cleaner for each surface. If new carpet was installed, a professional vacuum or steam clean will pull out any remaining grit worked into the fibers during construction.

Air Out the Space

Open windows when weather allows to clear out any lingering odors. Just as importantly, swap out your HVAC filters since ductwork almost always collects construction dust during a project and will circulate it back into the air if the filters aren't changed.

Final Touches

Polish hardware, wipe down doors and trim, and do a full walkthrough to make sure all trash is removed and every light fixture and outlet is clean and functional. This is the step that takes a space from clean to truly finished.
